Internet Safety and Netiquette Internet Safety Guidelines: •Place any device connected to the Internet and used by children in a common area where a responsible adult can supervise. •Know who you are communicating with. •Keep user names and profiles generic or non-specific. •Never post your full name, age, address, email address, phone number, picture, or school name anywhere online without checking appropriate privacy settings. •Do not share personal information or photos that would allow a stranger (including “online friends”) to locate you or pretend to know you. They may not be who they say they are. •Be sure to use private (not public) settings on social media. Do not share information with “friends of friends.” •Remember anything (text or photos) you share can be forwarded and altered. •Children should report any uncomfortable situation to an adult. •Children should share passwords, screen names, and email addresses with an adult or guardian. •Be aware of messages from unfamiliar persons and be cautious in opening and responding to them. Netiquette Guidelines: •Only share information that you wouldn’t mind if everyone knows. •Only share information you know is true. Avoid gossip and rumors. •Only make comments you would say to someone face-to-face. Be kind. •Ask yourself: “Will there be any negative consequences to what I’m sharing?” •Ask yourself: “How could my words be interpreted?” Express yourself clearly. •Ask yourself: “Would I want anyone to say this to or about me?” •Ask yourself: “Is this immature, inappropriate, or bullying?” •Know how to provide feedback or comments that are constructive and not hurtful. Use “I” statements. •Protect your reputation. Remember, once information is shared, it remains shared. •Know your audience and if formal language and proper grammar and spelling are called for. •Think about who or what you are representing.
